Today's Sign of the Apocalypse

Hey drug addicts - at a loss for who is to blame for all your problems? Is taking responsibility for your own actions and piss-poor decision making just one more of those things that make you take illegal drugs in the first place? Do you find yourself wishing for a way to turn your self-inflicted addiction in to cold hard cash? Well, does Canada's legal system have the answer for you.

A Saskatchewan woman who overdosed on crystal methamphetamine has successfully won a precedent-setting civil lawsuit against the drug dealer who sold her the highly addictive drug.

Full story here.

This is absolutely ridiculous. I seriously thought our tort system was messed up. Man, I was way off. What you have here is a prime example of the ever-growing (and unnervingly popular) nanny-state. Everyone is a victim, and there is someone and / or something you can sue to make everything all right in the world. Or at least get 50 large in your pocket, which is almost the same thing as happiness.

Does everyone realize what the next step is? Now, when you go down to the local corner to buy your dime bag, 8 ball, LSD, whatever they're calling drugs these days, you're going to have to sign a waiver. In fact, I won't be surprised if dealers start having legal counsel right there on the spot to make sure there's no liability.

This is tantamount to when the fat New York kids tried to sue McDonald's because they got fat off double cheeseburgers. At least the court had the good sense to toss that case.

Good job, Canada.
