SEC to THE Ohio State University: HA-HA!

Is this really a surprise to anyone? I didn't bother listening to the pre-game predictions because I'm sure they all centered around Jim Tressel and how he motivated his players by showing tapes from last year's blow-out loss to Florida. Good job, Jim. In related news, Ohio just outlawed sweater vests.

This makes 9 straight losses to an SEC team in a bowl game. Additionally, 7 different teams have put the smack down on THE Ohio State University - including 2 back-to-back losses to South Carolina before they were anything to write home about.

Following Michigan destroying Florida on January 1st, Kirk Herbstreit made a comment along the lines of, "Now we see that the Big-10 can run with the SEC." Um, no Kirk. We see that Florida has been overrated all year, and falling to the team that got beat by a 1-AA team is technically only half a loss. Like last year, Ohio State opened with some big plays, but when they had to actually play some football and not rely on the other team to screw up, we see the true nature of the Ohio State Buckeyes - useless nuts.

I really can't wait until I run into another Ohio State fan that insists on saying THE Ohio State University. My reply - THE Ohio State University that can't when championships or beat an SEC team. That should keep them quiet for a while.

The BCS Gives Us A Good Game

If I bet against whatever team Mark May and Lou Holtz predict to win, I wouldn't have to be at work at 6 in the morning ever again. This dynamic duo made arguments for why Oklahoma should be in the championship over LSU, and picked Hawaii to beat Georgia. Good call, guys. I won't even get started on Kirk and Lee. To be fair, Chris Fowler and Desmond Howard do a pretty good job and don't completely infuriate me.

Anyway, the VT-KU match up last night was a decent game. Both teams had good offense and, shockingly, a respectable defense. It was a pleasant surprise to watch a good BCS game - I guess this was the exception that proves the rule.

So if we're going to be stuck with this bat-sh#% loonball BCS system, I propose some sort of congressional intervention to fix whatever computer program is determining which teams play for the National Championship. If the President of the United States thinks steroids in baseball is worthy of airtime during the State of the Union, and Congress spends millions of dollars on a hearing to let major league players lie under oath, then surely we can get the computer wizzes at the NSA, CIA, or wherever to make a better program.

"Well, if you're so smart, Bobby, which teams do you think should be in the Championship?" you ask. Good question. First off, the idea that if a team is undefeated, it's automatically better than every 1-loss team needs to disappear. Or at least be modified to something like - undefeated, but plays in a ridiculously easy conference. This year's example - Hawaii. While the Warriors didn't get into the top 5 with their perfect regular season record, they did manage to get a BCS at-large bid. And Georgia proceeded to demonstrate with extreme prejudice what a defense can do to Colt's passing game.

Now that we have that minor detail cleared up - Georgia should be in the National Championship. They have the most balanced offense and, being in the SEC, a very strong defense. More often than not, the BCS seems to get 'wow-ed' at high-scoring offenses and forget about the fact that the same team has absolutely no defense (read Brian Brohm and Louisville). One can make an argument for LSU taking Georgia's place, but many of their victories this year were won due to shear luck and not necessarily superior performance. In the final moments of the Auburn-LSU game, Les Miles, in his infinite wisdom, decided to go for the touchdown over a gimme field goal, which would have given LSU the W just as effectively. Matt Flynn scrambled and came about 6" from an incomplete pass. Les perpetuated the myth that he's an aggressive but intelligent coach, and LSU all but waltzed into the National Championship game.

As for the other team that should be in the Championship - take your pick: OSU, WVU, USC, maybe even Kansas after last night's performance. Teams that should definitely not be considered: Oklahoma and Virginia Tech. Any of the approved teams have a decent offense, but they all play weak schedules.

So there you have it. I'm still going to pull for LSU because I'm an SEC kind of guy, and I can't stand Ohio State. Not because of Jim Tressel or any particular player, but the insipid players and fans that insist on saying, "THE Ohio State University." What is that? Is there more than one Ohio State University? COME ON!!

Have a good weekend.

ESPN is Trying to Kill Me

February through August is the most boring part of the year, as far as sports go. There is absolutely no football. While this leaves a void on the weekend for yours truly (all too often filled with stupid chores), it does give my blood pressure a chance to rest. I don't get all worked up about the absolutely retarded polls that lead to even more insanity in the BCS, and I don't have to listen to Lee Corso talk about his 3 days of coaching at Louisville. Hey, Lee, if your coaching advice was any good, you'd still be coaching.

Well, Mark Sclabach can't leave well enough alone. He's decided to go ahead and rank the top teams. And since I too can't leave well enough alone, I'm going to make fun of his stupid picks. Don't worry - I'm not going to go through all 25 teams he ranked. I'll simply target the 4 or 5 most ridiculous.

#1 - The University of Georgia. Good job, Mark. You got this one right. There were many a people who thought the Bulldogs should have played in the National Championships, but I'm not going to complain too much because the Championship stayed in the SEC, THE Ohio State University lost....again, and Hawaii was exposed as a not-so-great team when they have to play against a real defense.

#2 - Oklahoma University. Are you F-ing kidding me? In 2007, the Sooners lost to two unranked teams (Texas Tech and Colorado) before going on to be destroyed by West Virginia in the Fiesta Bowl. They have now lost a good chunk of their experience, but Mark thinks that Sam Bradford is the second coming. Whatever.

#3 - THE Ohio State University. First off, Congress (since they're in the habit of making sure everything is on the up and up in sports) needs to ban the Buckeyes from the National Championship for the next 5 years. It's simply mean to play with OSU fans' emotions like that. They already live in a crappy state. There's no need to keep fooling them into thinking they're going to beat an SEC team. And good ol' Jim Tressel is once again going after football powerhouses like Youngstown State, Ohio University, and Troy State.

#7 - The University of Florida. Ok, they probably deserve a higher ranking than 7, seeing that they have a returning Heisman winner at quarterback. But I don't like Tim Tebow. And I really don't like Urban Meyer. He's a first class jackass. How did that stupid little "calling the time-out right before the snap" work out for you, Urban? It didn't. You lost to Auburn....again. HA!

#16 - Auburn University. Probably a good spot for Auburn. When Auburn ran the table in 2004, we started at #17 (AP) and #18 (Coach's). As infuriating as it is to listen to commentators not give Auburn any respect, it seems to be good for Tommy and the Tigers. And with Brandon Cox not throwing interceptions anymore, Auburn should be much better off.

There's a couple other questionable rankings in there - Missouri, Kansas, Clemson, Texas Tech. Sure these teams did well last year, but we all remember what happened to Louisville, Rutgers and BYU in 2006. They pulled off some upsets, but couldn't seem to keep it up the following season. Oh well. I don't think the real preseason polls come out until April, so maybe a couple months of rest will do my heart good.

Death to the BCS

This is the last BCS-rant post until the bowl games start. I promise.

I didn't realize it until this morning, but the BCS number 1 team in the country has not played a team ranked higher than 21 in the regular season (ranking based on the week they played). Furthermore, of the four "ranked" teams Ohio State did play (Purdue - 23, Penn State - 25, Wisconsin - 21, and Michigan - 21), only one of them is still ranked (Wisconsin at #18). And let's not forget about the tough out of conference teams like Youngstown State (Div I-AA), Akron (Powerhouse MAC), and Kent State (another powerhouse MAC team).

It's not so much the fact that Ohio State is playing in the National Championship, but that they have been voted the #1 team. They didn't play in a conference championship and they're going to have 50 days between their last game and the BCS Championship game. Ohio State (and LSU for that matter) are in the title game basically because they were in the right place (ranking) at the right time.

I will watch the game and cheer for LSU - love watching the SEC beat up on the Big-10. But I maintain that, once again, the BCS has completely failed to identify the 2 best teams in the nation.

Poll Insanity

USA Today released their pre-season Coach's Poll today. I won't comment on each and every team; rather I will highlight the rankings that please me and the rankings that make me believe a team of lobotomized mountain goats are actually picking the teams.

1. Georgia - Spot on, coaches. At the end of the 2007 season, the Bulldogs had a very valid argument that they should have been in the National Championship game. But the absolute stupidity that is the BCS precluded it. Instead, they exposed Colt Brennan and the Hawaii Super-gay Rainbows for the second rate team that they were. Unfortunately, Georgia has to run the SEC gauntlet in order to have a chance at the title, and that is a difficult, if not impossible this season, task to accomplish.

3. THE Ohio State University - For the D&F faithful, you should be able to predict what will be said here. If you're new to the awesomeness that is D&F, click here for a list of OSU-related posts. As we've highlighted before, OSU's schedule is a joke. The Big-10 is a joke. Much like the 2007 season, THE Ohio State University had padded the 2008 schedule with a litany of virtually guaranteed wins. Thus, they'll coast through the season while teams in real conferences beat each other up. OSU will end up in the National Championship, again. And they will lose, again.

9. Clemson - Seriously? The ACC is known for basketball, boys and girls. I know they have some fancy pants running back, but playing in the ACC is almost as bad as the Big-10. Clemson will lose early and often. I'd put good money on Clemson being out of the Top 25 by midseason.

11. Auburn - I like this position for my Tigers. Auburn was ranked 18 going into the 2004 season, and that turned out pretty well. Compare that to the 2003 season where the Tigers started at 6 and ended unranked. It appears the underdog approach is a winner for Auburn. Plus that no talent ass-clown Brandon Cox is no longer throwing interceptions for Auburn, and they have a new offensive coordinator that runs the spread offense. Good stuff.

21. South Florida - Whatever. USF was able to capitilize on a mentally weak Auburn team at the beginning of the 2007 season. In an Obama-like obsession, the sports media propelled them to the #2 spot where they quickly discovered reality. They ended the season unranked. Like Clemson, the Bulls will not last - look for them in a pre-Christmas bowl, if anything.

As a side note, 9 out of the 12 SEC teams are either ranked or received votes - Arkansas, Ole Miss, and Vanderbilt were the 3 that weren't listed. Once again, the SEC is the toughest conference and continues to field the top, well-balanced teams in the nation.

Headline Insanity

It's time for some headline fun. Here's a sampling of what's in the news and why you should be concerned:

- We're still 4+ months from the start of college football, but ESPN couldn't wait to start over-rating THE Ohio State University. Apparently, Jim Tressel is having a hard time finding ways to challenge his players. What? Are all the D-2 Ohio schools refusing to play Ohio State now? Will THE Ohio State University have to play out of conference games that actually pose a threat? Stupid useless nuts.

- In an effort to reach more people, an Ohio church has started holding services at a local bar. For some reason, they think this an original idea. Um, check the bible, padre. Jesus turned water into wine on a regular basis. How do you think Christianity got to be so popular?

- Apparently, the only way to learn about the Koran and Islam is to be a slave beggar for some sort of Muslim holy man. The locals seem to believe that giving up one or more sons to be a slave is a sure-fire way to get yourself into paradise. Is there any "normal" behavior that gets you the 72 virgins in Islam? Anybody? As a side note, it's a pretty interesting story, if you have the time to read it.

- Al Gore is shocked that his movie hasn't inspired the world to change its views on global warming. His next move? Another movie. Do you know what the definition of insanity is? Doing the same thing over and over again, expecting different results.

Enjoy your Tuesday.

Oklahoma Is Blackmailing The BCS Committee

The absolute joke that is the BCS continues. West Virginia absolutely dominated Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl. And I know what most of you are going to say - Oklahoma was the Big 12 champion, so why shouldn't they be in a BCS game?

Well, since the 2005 Orange Bowl, Oklahoma has lost both of its BCS games. In 2005, USC beat OU to win the National Championship. In addition, OU shouldn't have even been in the game. This was the year that Auburn went undefeated and was denied the opportunity to play for the National Championship. Reason - according to the brainiacs at ESPN, Auburn's schedule was not tough enough. Like any other big program, Auburn had padded it's scheduled with some gimme games. Oklahoma's schedule that year included powerhouses like Bowling Green, Houston, Kansas State, Kansas (before they were decent), and Baylor. I could continue on this schedule difficulty thing for a while, but I think you get the idea.

At the 2007 Fiesta Bowl, Oklahoma fell to WAC Champion Boise State. Sure, Boise State pulled just about every trick play in the book, but if you're one of the top teams in the nation in one of the top conferences, your defense should be able to ferret out those gimmick plays. Of course, that's assuming you play defense - once again, I could go off on another tangent about how the PAC-10, Big-12, Big-10, Big East simply don't play defense. But I'll stick to the original point - OU did not play like a major conference champion should.

And that brings us to this year's contest. Despite my previous comment, WVU did manage to show up with some defense, and this seemed to shock Oklahoma (not too different from Hawaii's problem with Georgia). Oklahoma couldn't handle Pat White's spread offense, and they were once again embarrassed on the national stage.

So how does Oklahoma keep on getting into the BCS when it's painfully obvious that they cannot perform at the national level and /or do not live up to the hype that ESPN commentators bestow upon them? Simple - Bob Stoops has some sort of dirt on the powers that be at the BCS. It's the only logical explanation. Every year, before the bowl selection show, he calls each one of them up and reminds them why they're going to put OU in a bowl they don't deserve.

Onto the 2008 National Championship - I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Ohio State will repeat last year's performance and extend their BCS bowl record against SEC teams to 0-9. Like Oklahoma, they spent the 2007 season playing teams that provided little or no competition, and, as such, padded their stats and record. Reality is going to hurt.

As D&F has maintained throughout the bowl season, the BCS is broken and has completely failed to find the best 2 teams in the nation. But I've rambled long enough for now. Perhaps tomorrow I will discuss who really were the best two teams in the nation this past football season, and no, Auburn is not going to be one of them.

College Football is Almost Here

We are a mere 35 days from the start of the 2008 college football season, and I cannot wait. I love football season - grilling out (different from barbecue for your yankee heathens out there), watching Auburn, making fun of THE Ohio State fans - football season is without a doubt the best time of the year. You also have two of the best holidays in the midst of it - Thanksgiving and Christmas. My logic is unassailable.

To help get everyone else as pumped up, I bring you this fun poll. You can rank how you think the SEC will end this year. I didn't bother finding a similar poll for the Big 10, Big 12, Pac 10, or Big East simply because it doesn't matter how those conferences finish. Some sacrificial lamb will be brought forth on Thursday, January 8, and an SEC team will proceed to demonstrate how college football is played.

If THE Ohio State University manages to weasel their way into the championship again and lose to an SEC team, I am going to seriously start a petition to have the entire Big-10 conference knocked down to D-2, or whatever they're calling it these days.

And because I know you're curious as to how I ranked the SEC, here's my list:

East
1 - Georgia
2 - Florida
3 - South Carolina
4 - Tennessee
5 - Vanderbilt
6 - Kentucky

West
1 - Auburn
2 - LSU
3 - Mississippi State
4 - Ole Miss
5 - Arkansas
6 - Alabama

Actually, Alabama may finish higher, but as part of my degree from Auburn, I'm required to put Alabama last in every poll or the university will revoke my degree.

That's Assault, Brother!

This video shows that it took place after the NCAA Basketball Tournamnet, but I remember seeing it after the Football Championship. It doesn't really matter because it is still a funny video. Basically, Nike helped make a friendly wager between the two schools, where the losing school had to erect a statue on the winning team's campus. In either case Ohio State was the loser and had to endure having the Florida Gator mascot, Albert, erected on their campus.

The video is a must see, and in the beginning the students don't know how to react. Then things start getting physical, and once the assault begins it doesn't take long for Albert to come down. My favorite part has to be either when the kid on his way to calculus class takes time to read the plack then walks up and kicks the mascot in the family jewels; or when the frat guy coming home from an initiation ceremony is so distraught he pulls off some serious flying elbows on Albert. Those Ohio State fans are so crazy.

College Football This Weekend

With Ohio State not having to play a championship game this weekend, I figured I would help them and their fans out with what to watch this weekend (all times Eastern):

ACC Championship Game:
(6) Va. Tech vs. (11) Boston College 1pm on ABC

SEC Championship Game:
(14) Tennessee vs. (7) LSU 4pm on CBS

Big 12 Championship Game:
(9) Oklahoma vs. (1) Missouri 8pm on ABC

I know that we have discussed the complete mess the BCS is and how incredibly backwards it is that a team like Ohio State can waltz into the National Championship game without having to first win a conference championship game and loosing to an unranked team. I will never seriously consider the argument that the Big Ten is the best college football conference until they institute a championship game.

I realize that we are anointing Ohio State contenders in that game when Missouri obviously still has the upper hand. However they have to beat a team that has beat them 6 games straight. I hope that Missouri can pull it out and West Virginia can handle Pittsburgh so that we can be enthralled with the slobbernocker that is Missouri vs. West Virginia. Talk about a ratings grabber.

lso, I am not a huge college basketball fan. I will watch if it is on HD but other than that, I will tune in come March. However, http://www.thebutlerduo.blogspot.com/ is very good about covering basketball. Head over there if you want your dose of college basketball action.

BCS = Communism

So I'm watching the Rutgers - Louisville game on ESPN, and I can't help but to think back to the beginning of the college football season. The powers that be in the college football world (read: severely biased press) had made insightful predictions and rankings like: Louisville - 10; Rutgers - 16. Both of these teams promptly went onto self-destruct and now have records of 5-6 and 7-4 respectively. To be fair, Auburn was ranked 16, but then proceeded to fall to an unranked Mississippi State and South Florida. We are, however, the only ranked 4 loss team.

Anyway, it dawned on me: The BCS exists to reward otherwise unworthy teams of national prestige. Teams that play in conferences with no championship game (Big 10, Pac 10, WAC, Big East) are giving a free pass to the national stage while other real conferences (SEC, Big 12, etc.) have an actual competition to determine who the best team is. There's a word for a system that rewards people regardless of their accomplishments - Communism.

Don't get me wrong - I'm not trying to say that one conference is superior to another (SEC kicks everyone else's a--); simply that competition in some conferences is tougher compared to others. Only if there were some system that would pit teams from different conferences against each other. And maybe this "system" would be somewhat separated from the bias of reporters and coaches that rely upon ESPN's College GameDay Final for their opinions.

The lesser NCAA football divisions have successfully conducted a playoff system for several years. How hard would it be to incorporate their model into Division I's bowl system? I'm pretty sure one can devise a system that allows all the sponsors the attention they paid for while giving the country a clear (or at least less cloudy) college football champion. And don't go to the argument students will be away from class too long - do Division II and III students learn better or get less of education? If they can handle a playoff system, surely D-I schools (who happen to have more tutors for the athletes) can.

In conclusion, write your congressman (or woman). Publish blogs that only 10 people will read. Send menacing e-mails to people you think are involved with the BCS. Boycott something. Let's get a playoff system in place, so I don't have to wrap my brain around why Ohio State, after losing to an unranked Illinois team, is going to end up in a premiere bowl game.

WAKE UP, AMERICA!

9

The number 9.

--Nine is the highest single-digit number in the decimal system.

--In the NATO phonetic alphabet the number is called "novenine".

--The ordinal adjective is ninth.

--In the game of Craps, 9 is known as the center field because it is in the middle of the seven numbers on the field bet.

--The number worn by Roy Hobbs in the movie The Natural.

However, all those 9's pail in comparison to 9 being the number of bowl games THE Ohio State University has played against SEC teams and 9 is the number of losses they have.

I am sure Bobby will have more on this a little later. Congrats to LSU...its Auburn's turn next year. WAR EAGLE!!!

----Thanks to Wikipedia for the info on the 9

Here to Help

Nashville is bracing for probably the biggest snow accumulation that has ever been recorded. Or at least that is what you would think with the way people are driving and going to the grocery store to stock up on the essential milk and bread before the big whiteout. I went to weather.com today and saw that God was going to drop a few of the white flakes tonight. Coming from a state (Ohio) that regularly gets snow this time of year I really wasn’t that fazed. Let’s keep in mind that there is going to be zero inches of accumulation. I just went to Kroger to get some toothpaste (contrary to popular belief, I do in fact brush my teeth) and there was a huge run on milk and bread.

Why, when people hear that it will snow, do they go out and stock up on these two items. Are these the only items that will sustain them if snow falls? It is like when the Pharaohs went around Egypt killing all the young boys…the red X on the door meant that that house had been searched. Do the snow gods look for the red X to signify that milk and bread have been purchased and that house can be spared? Very few things can make people in the south panic more than the threat of snow (another being the threat that Dale Earnhardt Jr. might retire from NASCAR). It doesn’t even have to snow…just forecast it and schools and business will shut its doors and probably let out early so people can stock up, so they can survive the 4 hours the next morning that they might (and I stress might) have to wait for the white stuff to thaw.

Also, when snow is forecast…does that immediately affect the way you drive? It’s like a forecast of snow puts everyone on high alert and then they instantly turn into old people who just got their license renewed and are enjoying a Sunday drive except it is Tuesday. Don’t get me wrong, I love Nashville and the people here are great. It’s just an epidemic of people in the South that they are unable to operate when the threat of snow approaches. The Islamic terrorist could really do some damage if they could get a hold of George W. Bush’s racist weather machine and just threaten the South with snow everyday…that would cripple us.

So, to people living in the South and specifically those living in Nashville: I have faith that you will be able to operate your car normally and if you do need to stock up on survival items…go with the steak, Chips Ahoy Soft Batch Cookies and Mayfield Birthday Cake Ice Cream. Your family will thank you.

Phoning It In Friday

I'm driving to Ohio today to make fun of all THE Ohio State Fans for loosing the National Championship to AN SEC team 2 years in a row. Oh yeah, and there's a wedding too, but the primary purpose is to make sure Big-10 fans understand that they are in the Bush League while the SEC is the number one place NFL scouts go when looking for game changers. MAN ALIVE - I cannot wait for football season to start.

But because I love you D&F-ers, here's a classic video to make you laugh and hopefully start the weekend off on a good note. Please to enjoy:

P.S. - Everyone should send an e-mail to William (link to the right) for his slacker post yesterday. I know for a fact he had nothing better to do than sit around at his apartment complex pool and drink Coke Zero, and all he came up with was free doughnuts? Come on!

In Mascot National Championship News

In what can only be described as a miscarriage of justice, The University of Tennessee's Smokey has won the 2008 National Mascot Championship. I realize that I am biased towards Auburn, however if you saw Smokey in action and you saw Aubie in action, there is no comparison. The article does give Aubie his props…saying that he was a strong competitor but that an oversized hound dog was a better mascot. This humble commentator begs to differ. At least the useless nut mascot that is Ohio State’s didn’t make the cut.

Below is my evidence on why Aubie should be considered one of the greatest mascots to walk planet Earth. The only explanations for moves like that is some white guy that is in epileptic shock or the premier mascot of our time. I will go with the latter, but keeping in mind I know who Aubie is in this video, I could probably make a good case for the former. WAR EAGLE!!!
