BURN HER!!!!

One of the greatest movies of all time - Month Python and Holy Grail - is 91 minutes of complete absurdity. It's hilarious, and I'm pretty sure I've watched the movie in whole or part over 100 times. Of particular note is the witch burning scene. If you don't know what I'm talking about, you are no longer allowed to read this blog. Close your browser now.

Anyway, the witch scene is so great because it captures just how stupid people get when mob psychology takes over. Don't believe me? Well, here's a modern day example of mob psychology taking over and people attacking "sorcerers."

Yes, in Kinshasa, Congo, police are having a very difficult time with mobs of people attacking sorcerers for shrinking or removing men's penises. There's any number of crude jokes I could make here, but instead, I'm going to let your imaginations run wild.

My favorite part of the article is the quotes from the police officer who tries to reason with the people who think their penis has been shrunk or removed. You've got to admire the guys determination. If someone came up to me and claimed that his member had been shrunk by magic, I wouldn't even try to rationalize with the guy.

Of course, this really shouldn't surprise anyone who knows anything about Africa. This is the same continent where the majority of people believe having sex with a virgin is the best way to cure AIDS. I'm not making that up.

Mr. Bono Goes to The Pentagon

Why is Bono considered an expert on anything except recording hit singles and wearing silly sunglasses? Recently, Bono was in Washington, D.C. meeting with all sorts of people in an effort to raise awareness about AIDS in Africa and the whole debt relief thing.

It's great that Bono is using his celebrity to try and help people instead of pushing some crack-pot cult on unsuspecting people (I'm talking to you, Tom Cruise), but just because he's a famous rock star doesn't mean he's an expert on whatever cause happens to be important that week. Ok, that was a little unfair. Bono has been on the Africa thing for quite some time. I'm sorry, Bono....and Africa. I still don't think you're an expert.

Anyway, while in Washington, Bono went to the Pentagon (wait, it gets better) and met with Secretary of Defense William Gates to discuss not only the poverty problem in Africa, but security as well (WTF???). I will entertain the idea tha Bono might be able to offer some ideas on how to solve the poverty problem in Africa. I won't say "good" ideas, because anyone that thinks debt relief is cool clearly doesn't function on the same plane as the rest of us. But what in the name of all that is holy does Bono know about securing a country, let alone an entire continent? I'm sure he'd be the guy to go to on body guards and how to keep hoardes of groupies at bay, but that doesn't exactly translate into a comprehensive regional security plan.

You know what I think happened? Secretary William Gates is the new guy on the Bush cabinet, and, like any rookie, he gets stuck with the s*** details. Bush probably called him up to tell him about his "meeting" with Bono and laughed the entire time. I wouldn't be surprised if the call was on speaker phone and rest of the cabinet was in on the gag, including the Supreme Court. Yep, that makes way more sense than Bono talking about security. Way more.

As for Bono's comments, well, this video should explain everything:

Who Needs the Planet Earth Documentary?

Planet Earth is a documentary that was first shown on the BBC. It was so popular, and so well done that they decided to air it over here in the U.S. It is an eleven part series and it is worth watching if you get the Discovery Channel.

If you can't watch Planet Earth the next best thing is to watch an African water hole 24/7. This link comes to us from frequent Dink & Flika reader, Jon. The fine folks at Africam decided to set up a camera pointed at an African water hole. During the night it stays pretty calm and you are not likely to see much. However, if you are able to view this during the daytime things stay pretty active. Enjoy.
