While helping out last year with a 6th grade basketball team (The Miscellaneous Heat) I was able to discover the true meaning behind basketball. It’s not scoring more points, it’s not who wins the most games (although those things are nice)…it comes down to who gets the “Honor The Game” trophy at the end of the season. This also signifies who the worst team is in the league but they wanted the kids to win something. So this morning when I was reading USA Today I saw that they probably need to institute this same award in college basketball. St. Louis University men’s basketball team decided to play like 6th graders last night. And in doing so, scored the least amount of points ever scored in a D1 basketball game. They came away from the game with their heads held high after scoring a remarkable 20 points…all game. They scored 7 in the first half and almost redoubled their efforts and sank 13 in the second. Their leading scorer came away with the elusive (albeit impressive) single single (he had 5 points and 6 rebounds).
So, thank you St. Louis University (SLU) for showing the kids of America that you can still get full ride scholarships to college even if you suck. And thank you for Honoring The Game.
